Flotsam and Jetsam Hostel

I first heard this from a movie of the same name (haven’t watched it yet). It was an artsy hipster themed hostel and bar. Peaceful in the morning, crazy at night. I have been there twice - first with a friend, second with a group of friends.

HOW TO GET THERE

There are buses that go directly to San Juan La Union. There are also buses bound to Abra and Vigan that will pass by San Juan.

Partas Transit (Cubao and Pasay) - better to reserve a ticket early if you are going on a weekend/holiday

Viron Transit (Cubao) - cheaper; no reservation available

Dominion Transit - cheapest; you cannot sleep throughout the ride coz it’s bumpy. LOL

HOW TO BOOK

You can book online via their website. Here’s the trick, they don’t take super advance bookings so you have to wait for the end of the month to be able to book for the next month. You get me? And boy were they always fully booked immediately. Prices vary depending on the rooms and the dates. It was cheaper on normal days and weekdays.

Kubo Rooms

On my 2 stays in Flotsam & Jetsam, I always opt for the kubo rooms because it was cheaper. The room has eight beds (double deck) with its own kulambo and fan per bed. They also have cabinets per person. For the lock, you may bring your own but they also provide one. Bathrooms are outside.

The Restobar

The thing about F&J restobar is you can both chill and party, whichever you prefer. On my first stay, we just chill by one of the papags, gazing at the colorful lanterns. On my second stay, we partied! For the guests staying in the hostel, it was easier to enter the restobar area. However, for walk-in guests, they needed to wait on a long line to enter, especially since it was Saturday (party night).

The food was expensive, maybe because of the hype and popularity of the place. I have tried their fries, pizza, carbonara, and sangria. They were all good.

Unlimited Breakfast

Each room/bed has a complimentary breakfast buffet. I love buffets and I certainly enjoy this one. The menu wasn’t much. We got the usual bread with different spreads, fruits, cereals, coffee. You can sit in one of their fluffy pillows while digging your breakfast. It was fun.

All in all, I love this place and I will surely come back for more photoshoots.
